The Challenge

CrossHarbor Capital Partners is a recognized leading manager of alternative investments. The firm combines a disciplined, multi-asset investment strategy with highly-experienced professionals to generate superior, risk-adjusted returns for the firm and its investors. CrossHarbor focuses on opportunistic transactions in the real estate, distressed loans and private equity sectors. As CrossHarbor considered buying a resort company in Montana, the firm wanted to gain a clear understanding of the resort’s computer network to determine all the technologies in use as well as the hardware and software assets owned by the resort. The resort in consideration, Yellowstone Club, is the world’s only private ski and golf community—set amidst the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The resort’s superior amenities, easy charm and overwhelming natural beauty present an incomparable venue for luxurious mountain living, year-round recreation, and cherished family traditions. “Accurately evaluating the IT and communications technologies of such an impressive resort was a critical step in the purchasing process,” said Patrick O’Sullivan, Managing Director and CFO for CrossHarbor. “The assessment would help us determine the current status of the resort’s major technologies and what might be required for system upgrades.”

The Solution

Having interacted with Prosper-IT at his previous employer, O’Sullivan decided to turn to Prosper-IT again, knowing the firm had all the expertise required for the project. “We not only needed a solution provider with network infrastructure expertise but also one with telephone system and security expertise as well as knowledge of software applications,” O’Sullivan said. “We also wanted to partner with Prosper-IT for the due-diligence and project management skills it offers, which are necessary to create detailed reports with summary data showing where the resort might be lacking in each system area.” Prosper-IT assigned a team of experts to CrossHarbor, including a business partner so that O’Sullivan could always interact with high-level management. “Having access to a partner and the diverse experience Prosper-IT has within our industry were key reasons why we chose to partner with them,” O’Sullivan said. “They can apply their experience to many of the challenges we were facing, and not only do the partners provide technical expertise, they also offer an extensive business background—which enables them to present solutions that balance technical needs with business requirements.”

The Benefits

Prosper-IT evaluated and provided detailed reports on the Yellowstone Club resort for CrossHarbor across four key technology systems:

  • Network Infrastructure
  • Telephone Infrastructure
  • Security Operations
  • Software Applications

The report generated by Prosper-IT, based on 200+ hours of research, identified technical weaknesses within the computer and telephone system infrastructures. Prosper-IT also provided detailed analysis of a new VoIP system that CrossHarbor was considering for the resort and helped O’Sullivan select a cost-effective solution. “Prosper-IT helped us realize the company’s applications were in good shape but that the network infrastructure and the telephone system needed to be upgraded,” O’Sullivan said. “We knew exactly where we would need to spend money and approximately how much before we purchased the company.” Based on the Prosper-IT recommendation, CrossHarbor deployed a new voice system for the resort to establish a communications network that would properly support the needs of the business. “The previous telephone system was outdated and very costly,” O’Sullivan said. “Prosper-IT projected the new system would achieve ROI in less than 18 months, and they were right on the money.” Looking ahead, O’Sullivan considers Prosper-IT to be a valuable resource he can turn to as CrossHarbor requires high-end technology expertise. “Meeting with them on a regular basis also keeps us informed of the latest technologies that might benefit our company,” O’Sullivan said. “They have proven themselves to be competent, creative and responsive when it comes to meeting our technology planning needs.
